In addition to economic dynamics, he examines social perspectives and the impacts of transformations on spatial justice. His research group also works on futures of globalisation, with an emphasis on current trends in the rescaling of global networks and the interlinking of global value chains and production networks with regional development processes. The geographical focus of his work is on Germany, the Baltic Sea region and countries in East and South-East Asia. Building on contributions to basic research, his research interests explicitly encompass application-oriented and transdisciplinary aspects. He is programme director of the MSc Regional Development and the MSc Bioeconomy, spokesperson of a regional bioeconomy alliance, and member of the expert council on rural development at the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional identity.
